The Area of Relief Work
The Navgachiya subdivision was the worst affected area in Bhagalpur. We took a survey visit to the subdivision to find out the worst affected villages. We travelled to villages in block of Kharik, Bihpur etc. As we were crossing the Ganga Bridge to Navgachiya, we saw only water and banana crops destroyed in it. People were living on both sides of road. As we moved to village pucca roads, they were also taken over by people. People were living on the roadside in temporary sheds. All along the road to the block, we saw people either living the roadside or walking carrying baggage on their heads. The entire area on the left side of the road was flooded. Far away I could see many houses fully surrounded by water.
The location was decided on basis of extent of relief work carried out by other people and accessibility. We chose khairpur panchayat in Kharik Block. There were no relief work being carried out in the villages and they were accessible by boats only which was very risky also as daily reports of drowning of boat was common.
Villages in which relief materials were distributed are
These villages were surrounded by water. People were living in open sky or whatever they could get to assemble a makeshift hut. Many people homes were submerged in water. The major community was other backward caste (OBC) people and around 30% of people belong to schedule caste. In Mirjafri, more than 90% people belong to Islam religion. Most of the people have nothing to eat when water came around 20 August in their villages. In Lattipur, people made 10 km of embankment to protect the Kharik market and highway from rising water on Ganges. It was entirely community effort and somehow they saved it.
Duration:
The relief work was carried out between September 7, 2008 to September 29, 2008.
Impact Assessment
The strategy of relief material distribution was staggered one. The relief materials were distributed in phases and in different villages. If some other organisation or group is distributing relief material in one village, no distribution was done in that village on that day. We were aware of other people and groups providing relief materials to the flood affected people.

A total of 2000 family and 11000 individuals benefitted from the distribution of above quantity of food materials. The affected families were able to get food materials which enable them to tide over a period of 10 days. Local organisation and people directed their relief materials and contribution through us. We distributed more than 2000 pieces of clothes and biscuits given by local people. There were indirect benefits like other group also focused their effort in these villages. There were short term employments to people affected by flood by helping in distribution of food materials.
Most important, it gave hope to people who were losing hope. They got to know that some one cares for them and for this, people will be forever obliged to CARE TODAY
