    INTRODUCTION

                Bihar is the most under financed state of India barring north east. Bihar has weak financial markets and people have low access to credit. There is potential for 6 million microfinance clients with market size of more than 30 billion rupees.  It is estimated that Bihar can easily have 4 large local microfinance players having presence in most of the districts. The microfinance operation will create employments, wealth creation for the people at the bottom of the pyramid in Bihar.  Microfinance service is one of the ways to empower the people of Bihar  economically to live life with dignity.

  • Moving the bottom of pyramid clients out of poverty by facilitating creation of wealth

  •         More than 40,000 clients in by 2012
  •         More than 10 crore rupees in outstanding
  •         More than 20 crore rupees of disbursement
  •         0% portfolio at risk

The Clients:
                             All the clients for microfinance operation will be women. Women are more prudent and more conscious about dignity and social standing. Following are the  criteria for becoming Bihar Development Trust Microfinance operation clients:
  •  A woman 
  •  Member of joint liability group formed by Bihar Development Trust
  •   Household income of Rs 1000- Rs 5000 per month
  •   Having regular source of income either by husbands’ business or her own business
o    Selling milk
o    Selling vegetable
o    Street hawker
o    Rikshaw drivers
o    Tempo wala
o    Drivers
o    Handicraft workers especially silk weavers, painters etc
o    Farmers
o    Small pan, kirana, manihari shop owners
o    Employees of garages, dhabas, small establishments etc.
o    Dhobis, dais, others etc.
 
CURRENT STATUS
  •  Two branches - Patna & Bhagalpur
  •  16 people team
  •  700 groups
  •  3500 members
  •  2000 loans disbursed
  •  Rs.15,800,000 disbursement
  •  Rs.7,500,000 outstanding

 RISK & ASSUMPTIONS:

 
  The project assumes explosive growth in microfinance sector in Bihar. There is improvement in investment climate in Bihar and capital and human resources are available to facilitate the growth of microfinance operation.
